Western Colorado Chorale

A Western Colorado Institution

In 1984, Dr. Monte Atkinson organized the Western Colorado Chorale, a group of approximately 40 auditioned singers. The Chorale's mission, then and now, is to perform beautiful, high quality choral repertoire in the Grand Valley. In addition, the Chorale offers its singers an opportunity to perform major works and sing with other highly skilled vocal artists. The Chorale performs major choral works with the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra annually.

During Dr. Atkinson's leadership over this quarter century, the Chorale's performances have included the Bach B Minor Mass, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and Mass in C, Durufle's Requiem, Haydn's Oratorio, etc. The Chorale's concerts also highlight opera favorites, Broadway show tunes, and holiday programs that feature members of the chorale as soloists.

Certainly a highlight in Dr. Atkinson's career as musical director was being invited to conduct a large chorus and orchestra at Carnegie Hall, New York-not just once, but on three occasions! Members of the Western Colorado Chorale, the Colorado Mesa University choirs, and regional high school singers accompanied him to the Carnegie Hall performances in February 2008, January 2010, and the summer of 2012.

The Western Colorado Chorale is a complementary organization of the Grand Junction Musical Arts Association and co-sponsored by Colorado Mesa University. It is managed by a Board of Directors selected from the membership of the Chorale with musical and artistic direction from Dr. Atkinson. The majority of the Colorado Mesa University voice faculty sings in the Western Colorado Chorale and serve in important leadership roles. The music we do promises to stimulate as well as entertain the most discerning music aficionado.
